Research & ordering parts

Added: 21-3-2004 18:51:26

First of all, I want to thank Jakob Erland from Gyraf Audio for making this DIY project possible.

Here you can read my story of my first DIY project, the GSSL bus compressor (This report consists of three pages!) This page was originally written in Dutch so some links will be useless to you (sorry for that). All info and schematics came from http://www.gyraf.dk/gy_pd/ssl/ssl.htm. Also, on this page are a lot of links to other DIY sites.

I do have some soldering skills but I don't know much about electronics so ordering the right parts is going to take a wile. I ordered 3 sets off pcb's on a DIY forum called "the LAB". The VCA's came from www.profusionplc.com.

Here a pic from the original.

The money arrived safely

Today I got an email from Chef, from whom I ordered the PCBs, telling me that the money has arrived. I choose payment option "cash in an envelope". Still, I find this a little tricky, 100 euros in an envelope.

Today I wired the money to Profusion, for the VCAs . Strange: an English company with a bank account in Barcelona!?

Waiting

Added: 27-3-2004 15:19:21

My DIY project consists of a lot of waiting for parts to arrive. I will be able to start in April if everything goes as planned. I used the "bill off materials" (BOM) from this site KEV'S DIY-PAGE. Here a direct link http://recording.org/users/kev/ssl_parts&pricing.htm. Here is a list that might come in handy when picking capacitors for the first time:

microFarads (µF)   nanoFarads (nF)   picoFarads (pF)
0.000001µF = 0.001nF = 1pF
0.00001µF = 0.01nF = 10pF
0.0001µF = 0.1nF = 100pF
0.001µF = 1nF = 1000pF
0.01µF = 10nF = 10,000pF
0.1µF = 100nF = 100,000pF
1µF = 1000nF = 1,000,000pF
10µF = 10,000nF = 10,000,000pF
100µF = 100,000nF = 100,000,000pF

The VCA's have arrived!

Toegevoegd: 30-3-2004 21:13:05

The VCAs, ordered by Profusion, arrived today. I choose the THAT 2180LB VCA. This one is pre trimmed, so no messing around with distortion meters that I don't have.... Now you also can leave out two trimmers.

Padded envelope

Trés chique!

Twelve pieces, for 4 GSSLs, if I don't blow up any one that is.

Some more parts

I ordered most of the parts at RS-Components

Big RS box.....

Check..

Double check

The 19 inch enclosure without top and bottom plate.

Black Allen screws, bought at Zwager in The Hague. The screws that came with the 19 inch enclosure were okay, but not as nice as these ones and the original has them too. I'm trying to make an exact copy of the original where possible... I found out later that RS-components has a huge assortment of screws.

Clockwise: XLR chassis parts, toroidial transformer and the "round hole punches". Round hole punches make very nice round holes in steel up to 3mm thick.

On the left: push-button, on the right: lamp holder.

NE5532/5543

Added: 1-4-2004 21:58:58

These opamps were bought at Stuut & Bruin. I wanted to buy them at RS, but they did not have the right version. For now, I don't know enough about electronics to go for a different version. What we need is a NE5534 and NE5532 with a AP or a AN suffix.

Enough opamps for about 4 GSSL's and again: if I don't blow some up that is....
